Book Design

The experience of reading has always astonished me. First of all, you scan a wall of books until one of them speaks to you. It grabs your attention and you just have to hold it in your hands. You want to feel it, touch it, for only then are you ready for the next step - getting to read it.

I’m here to bring more of these experiences into our world!

Especially with cookbooks, art books, catalogues, non-fiction books, or any creative book project that wants to be realised.

Don’t judge a book by its cover!

And yet, it all starts with a catchy cover - so go big, loud, crazy, or go delicate, subtle, thoughtful. Creativity is endless, and so is Book Design. Think outside the box, with a box outside the book - a slipcase could be your kind of style!

Binding Techniques

Is a book even a book without its binding? I’ll just leave you with this thought for a moment...

In any way, important for you to know is, that binding techniques carry conceptual messages and let the book move the way you want it to. They can even add a special aesthetic & haptic element to your design. The coptic binding shown next to this very informative text was chosen, so the calendar lies flat when opened - just one nice feature of this particularly aesthetically pleasing technique.

Paper

Just take any two pieces of paper you can see around you – do they look, feel or even sound the same? I thought not...

For me, the world of paper is actually a whole universe. With or without wood, recycled with grass or fruits, bleached to get that perfect hue of white or off-white. Dyed in all the colours our cosmos has to offer, or with particles added to create a special texture – that one kind of paper will always find its project! So magical stand-out pages can be created.

Layout

The art of arranging text and images is a bit like painting on a white canvas. You may be familiar with the fear of a blank sheet of paper just before sketching, drawing, designing, or writing. You don’t have to worry! I create custom-designed solutions that will turn the message in your head into an aesthetically appealing work of art.

Typography

Reading should last forever – or at least until you need to top up your cup of tea…

It shouldn’t tire our eyes but lead them gently, with grace and calmness. Therefore typography is essential in designing a book. Not only should it help guide us through a book, but it’s also an important element to portray feelings, emotions, and aesthetics. With me by your side, you’ll find just the right font for your thoughts.

Citrus Condensed is not a typical cookbook. It is a citrus fruit that wants to be eaten. It comes in a wooden fruit box wrapped in silk paper, waiting for the hungry reader to grab it off the shelf. Unwrapping unveils its glossy skin & fragrance. When the fruit gets peeled you arrive at the fleshy part. By splitting the segments apart, three individual books appear. Citrus maxima – “Drinks & Soups”, Citrus medica – “Savoury” and Citrus reticulata – “Condiments & Sweets” are the three individual cookbooks. In no specific order, they are held together with little hidden magnets so you can easily pull them apart and share them when cooking together with friends and loved ones. A hand-stab binding with Japanese folds creates pages in the shape of

citrus segments. When you finally bite into the fruit, there is a surprise flash of neon yellow. This paper is also the background colour for the hand-drawn illustrations showing the ingredients and accompanying some of the recipes. The wrapping of soft tissue paper reduces the sourness and represents the segments’ silky skin. The white pages have sides with different textures, one matte & coarse and one glossy & smooth, hinting at the book’s juiciness. The recipes are printed on the rougher paper to give tactile contrast to the softness which can be glimpsed through the inner side of the Japanese fold. This combination of textures, colours and the tickling of your senses is an invitation to enjoy every sour & invigorating bite of this arty cookbook. Enjoy!
